The person behind the stories

A small team.
A world of stories.

Storytime Bao is being built by Leland Char, with a simple aim: make Mandarin story time something families look forward to.

Meet the founder

Technology, with a place at story time.

Leland works across product, engineering, and machine learning. He led computer vision and machine learning teams at Coupang, launched Facebook Stories Ads at Meta, and managed advertising supply at Walmart. Earlier, he advised companies on growth and digital transformation at McKinsey.

He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Southern California, graduating magna cum laude, and an M.S. in Petroleum Engineering. He later taught himself machine learning and full-stack development through courses, research, and building products.

For Storytime Bao, that experience has a quieter purpose: create a welcoming place where a child and a grown-up can share a story, hear Mandarin, and find a few words to use together.

Built around families.

The product begins with ten complete illustrated stories, free chapter narration, and Chinese text with optional Pinyin and English. The library spans beginner through advanced language labels, with parent notes to help families choose. Leland is the person building it.

His public profiles are linked here so you can see his professional background and technical work. For the product itself, start with the story library or read what Storytime Bao is building.
